posted in: Lifestyle 0

Creating plant-based 4th of July recipes for your BBQ is easier than you think. When most people think about a Fourth of July BBQ, they imagine hot dogs, hamburgers, and a grill packed with meat. I think about the juicy watermelon, the colorful salads and of course the corn on the cob! I’m also a fan of the strawberries and blueberries found in my cousin’s world famous fruit salad.

The truth is that some of the best dishes at any BBQ are already plant-based. In fact, the BBQ table is probably more plant-based than you think. Watermelon, corn on the cob, fruit salad, beans, slaws, and fresh vegetables have always been cookout favorites. The recipes below build on those familiar flavors while adding a little extra color, creativity, and joy to 4th July menu.

So let’s show off our plant-based life this summer. Whether you’re hosting a backyard gathering or bringing a dish to share, try these plant-based Fourth of July recipes and get ready for some high-fives!

A Plant-Based Crowd-Pleasing Appetizer

Spicy Sweet Potato Hummus

Every great BBQ needs something for guests to snack on while the conversation gets started. This Spicy Sweet Potato Hummus is creamy, flavorful, and a welcome change from traditional dips. Serve it with pita chips, tortilla chips, cucumber slices, carrots, and bell peppers for an easy appetizer everyone can enjoy.

Why I’m Bringing It: No one expects the marriage of chickpeas and sweet potatoes. It’s packed with flavor, and gives everyone something delicious to nibble on before the main event. Shout out to the iconic Jenné Clairborne of Sweet Potato Soul for creating this tasty treat.

Plant-Based Fourth of July Salads

White Bean Summer Salad

If you’re looking for a dish that’s hearty enough to satisfy and easy enough to prepare ahead of time, this yummy White Bean Summer Salad delivers. The beans add plant-based protein and substance, making it much more than a side dish.

Why I’m Bringing It: It travels well, tastes even better after the flavors mingle, and keeps me full long after the party starts. I made this recipe for a cooking demonstration at the NY Botanical Gardens and it was a hit! A huge thanks to Dr. Neal Bernard and his Cookbook for Reversing Diabetes for this recipe.

Sweet Potato and Golden Beet Salad

You can do more with a sweet potato than make candied yams! lol. This colorful salad brings vibrant summer colors to the table. Roasted sweet potatoes and golden beets create a naturally sweet and satisfying dish that feels special enough for a holiday celebration. The Apple Cider Vinaigrette is everything!

Why I’m Bringing It: Every BBQ needs one dish that makes people stop and ask, “Who made this?” Ha!

The Side Dish Everyone Talks About

Mexican Street Corn

No Fourth of July BBQ feels complete without corn. This easy version of Mexican street corn transforms a familiar summer favorite into something bold, creamy, and packed with flavor. I grew up with corn on the cob dripping in butter with salt and pepper. But wow! I first discovered Mexican street corn at a food festival in the South Bronx and immediately understood why people love it. It’s smoky, tangy, satisfying, and the perfect addition to any summer gathering.

Why I’m Bringing It: It’s a guaranteed crowd-pleaser and proves that vegetables can be the star of the table. And it’s so pretty!

Fresh Fruit Parfaits

Dessert doesn’t have to be complicated. Layered with fresh fruit and cream, these parfaits are festive, colorful, and easy to customize with your favorite berries. If you don’t want to make your own fresh cream, try a ready made, non dairy whipped cream instead.

Why I’m Bringing It: Every holiday table needs a little Red, White and Blue.

Why Plant-Based Fourth of July Recipes Belong at Every BBQ

One of the biggest misconceptions about plant-based eating is that it’s restrictive. But when I look around a Fourth of July gathering, I see abundance. I see watermelon, corn, beans, berries, fresh herbs, colorful vegetables, and all the dishes that people go back to for seconds.

These plant-based Fourth of July recipes prove that you don’t have to sacrifice flavor, tradition, or celebration to eat more plants. Sometimes the most memorable dishes at the party are the ones that have been there all along.
