Sea moss can be found almost everywhere these days. There are pills, powders and gels. Straight from the ocean and sounds like a miracle. Foodies and non-foodies alike are touting it’s legendary ability to do everything from boosting your immune system to supporting weight loss.
I just started adding sea moss to smoothies and teas after learning about its nutritional value. It offers essential nutrients including Vitamins A, E, B and Zinc. You will also find lots of iodine. If you have any thyroid issues or issues with iodine, please consult your physician before adding this to your daily regimen.
Irish Sea Moss is found in and around Ireland. Note, the Jamaican variety is often called Purple Sea Moss.
The History of Sea Moss
Sea moss is a type of seaweed and has been around for centuries. It seems that during the Potato Famine (1845-1851), nearly one million people died of hunger and starvation. The Irish started using it to provide much needed nutrients to the community. Irish moss contains many minerals needed for human health, including calcium, iron, and potassium.
The first time I ever heard about this moss was from watching a Dr. Sebi video. I heard him say that sea moss had 92 of the 102 minerals that our body needs. My journey into a plant-based lifestyle led me to a new world of superfoods including chia seeds, quinoa and yep…sea moss.
One More Thing…
You can find this miracle sea weed all over the planet. Look for it along the coasts of the Atlantic, parts of the Caribbean, Asia, South America and Africa.
Have fun making this yummy beverage. I usually don’t like to eat bananas but I will I use them in smoothies. This one is simple and easy to make. I use Felicity’s Sea Moss in this recipe. I like that it is clear and clean. It doesn’t taste like the ocean or anything else. This smoothie is the perfect pick me up around 3pm. You know, long after the coffee has worn off but way before it’s time to go home.
