Juneteenth is an opportunity to reflect and remember those that sacrificed so that we could thrive. I was a full adult before I even knew what Juneteenth was all about. It was not a part of any social studies or history lesson found in my NYC classroom. Texas confirmed the holiday in 1980. People across the United States and around the world now acknowledge and celebrate Juneteenth.

What is Juneteenth?

Also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, Juneteenth commemorates the day of the General Order # 3 announcement. This announcement freed approximately 250,000 enslaved people in Gavelston, Texas. They learned of their release from bondage, two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.

Why is The Punch Red?

Many African cultures serve red drinks, foods and spices in a variety of celebrations. The color red has a connection to strength and vitality. The color also represents the bloodshed of the millions who endured the unimaginable. Red foods and drinks are central to the celebration of Juneteenth.
