Grocery shopping now looks very different than it did just a few years ago. We used to be a family of full-fledged carnivores. Now it’s mostly plants. We are eating differently and our approach to grocery shopping has changed too. I live in the Bronx with a population of 1.4 million. The best day to shop for me? Any day that the stores are empty! lol
But seriously, I have tried grocery shopping in many different ways just to share this insight with you. Why? I believe you are here because you are curious about adding more fruits, grains and vegetables to your plate. You may even be thinking about remixing your refrigerator and pantry so that it reflects your new interest in plant-based nutrition. I want you to stay encouraged so giving you my secrets to grocery shopping just sounds like the right thing to do.
Mid-Week Grocery Shopping For The Win!
Are you surprised? Not me, I knew that grocery shopping on Wednesday would make a world of difference. I have always known that Saturdays and Sundays meant crowed supermarkets. Most of this world is on a Monday-Friday schedule. I found that Wednesday is the sweet spot. Just the right amount of people walking up and down the aisle.
The Early or Late Bird Really Gets The Worm
So what holds true in life is true for grocery shopping as well. Get there when the store opens to take advantage of the hard work of the overnight crew. When the store closes, everything gets reset so that it looks fresh at the top of the day. This also true in retail, I was one of those late night workers at Ann Taylor who took great pride in making sure that everything looked perfect!
Can’t get there in the early morning? Get your grocery shopping done just before closing. Lots of restocking and organizing happens just as the store closes too. I have found that the supermarket is less busy about an hour just before closing.
Grocery Shopping on Produce Re-Stock Days
What’s a plant-based life without the best in produce? Shopping for fresh produce can be hit or miss. Do you really want produce that’s been hanging around all week? This is your chance to get cozy with the team wherever you shop. Find out what day the major produce shipment arrives and you have VIP access to the best of what’s available. If it’s on a Wednesday, you really hit the jackpot!
At the end of the day, you are going to go grocery shopping when it makes sense for you. Whatever you decide, don’t shop hungry, make a shopping list, grab a couple of reusable bags and get your shop on!
